The Portrait wines embody the original promise Peter Lehmann made to the grape growers to make wines that show what the Barossa is all about. With a “family” of more than 140 growers across the length and breadth of the Barossa, Peter Lehmann has created a portrait of the region with the top four varietals that have made it famous.

Peter Lehmann calls Riesling “the noblest white wine variety” and traditionally produces a dry, crisp wine style. The Portrait Eden Valley Dry Riesling is sourced from vineyards dotted throughout the cool climate, high altitude levels of the esteemed Eden Valley. All single vineyard fruit was vinified separately, then blended in line with the traditional Lehmann style - citrus, crisp acidity and multiple layers reflecting the individual vineyards.

We believe Eden Valley Riesling to be one of Australia's most distinctive wine styles.

Expert Reviews

Bright, light straw-green; the wine provides a fascinating contrast to the Lehmann H&V Barossa Riesling, firmer, more intense and filled with zesty lime juice flavours, bolstered and lengthened by good acidity; it carries its message through the length of the palate and aftertaste. Rating 94 - Drink by 2020 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (AUG/2012)

The Barossa Wine Show delivered a result for the people this year, naming an $18 sensation as its finest white wine of any variety and any age. The team at Lehmanns are riesling superstars, and it’s testimony to their wizardry and to season that even their entry wine can look as magnificent as this at such a young age. It ticks every box: delicate fragrance of lime blossom and lemon zest, precise palate focus of granny smith apples, slatey structure and an outstanding acid line that carries long into the finish. Rating 94 - Drink 2012 -2014 or 2017 - 2022, Tyson Stelzer,

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.
