Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

A well balanced, elegant wine with pungent bouquet which is light and fragrant in youth, acquiring depth and personality over time (1-2 years). The fresh notes of apples and exotic fruit evolve to nuances of dried fruits and hay.

Palate

The palate is full, very mellow and round, with good body and acid balance and immediate appeal.

Food Matching

A refreshing, medium-bodied dry white, it is a great match for soups, vegetable risotti, delicately flavoured pasta dishes and fish dishes.

Winemaking Note

The Pinot Grigio undergoes a gentle press and is fermented (in bianco, i.e without maceration) and matured in stainless steel tanks in the winery’s subterranean vaults. The wine is bottled seven months after harvest.

DOC/DOCG

Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) was the first Italian quality assurance label for wines in 1963, and in common with the French AOC, specifies the geographical area, permitted grape varieties and minimum alcohol level. It may also stipulate the production method, including minimum ageing.

Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) wines must meet all DOC requirements, must be bottled in the region of production, and are subject to a Ministry of Agriculture tasting. Each bottle will carry a numbered seal of approval.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

It was Lizio Plozner, in the 1960’s, who first believed in the region and pioneered viticulture in the area. Today the Plozner winery is headed up by 4th generation Sabina Maffei. The estate is based on a 100 hectare rectangle (60 hectares under vine) situated in the foothills of Grave del Friuli, not far from the Alps and close to the region’s morainic hills. The region favours a dry, cool climate and healthy grapes.

Francesco Visentin continues as the winemaker, and he is responsible for the consistency and reliability of the great value wines of Plozner for the past twenty years. The wines are cellared and aged in the subterranean vaults of the on-site Plozner winery. The Plozner wines reflect their own region of origin.

Terroir

Stones and gravel deposited by the Meduna and Tagliamento Rivers make up the soils where Plozner vines are planted. Alluvial in origin yet not very fertile, the soils guarantee excellent drainage, low vegetative vigor and naturally small crop yields.
