We endeavour through meticulous viticulture and wine production, sympathetic to the prevailing vintage conditions to produce a Cabernet that will express the characters of the grape in harmony with the qualities of the place. Winemaking is geared towards producing a wine that is harmonious and complex by fermenting with gentle maceration, some long skin contact time, but largely a hands off approach and of course a moderate use of quality, fine grained French oak. Small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec were also used this year to provide roundness and complexity.

Expert Reviews

Blackcurrant, blueberry, aniseed, cedar and nougat oak, graphite and maybe a touch of gum leaf – though not much. Medium bodied with a good volume of fruit and flavour but the thing here, which invariably wins me over, is that it is not sweet. Not sweet. I repeat. It’s dark and minerally and firm with an impressive spread of fine grained but very dense tannin and a finish that runs long. Acidity is fresh, but just so, and buried deep within the core of the wine. Stately. Statuesque. Touch and go for a higher score. Terrific. More to come. Rating 94+, Gary Walsh, Wine Front (16/JAN/2014)

"Finely crafted, this very elegant young cabernet of medium to full body has the balance and underlying structure to age gracefully. Lightly minty and herbal, its bright, layered fragrance of cassis, small red berries and cedar/vanilla oak reveals nuances of chocolate and a hint of pine needle that should disappear over time. Supported by a pliant spine of dusty, crunchy tannin, it’s long and evenly measured, building richness and depth of fruit towards its persistent finish. A classical style". Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Plantagenet takes its name not only from its home, but also from its heritage. In 1968 in a stroke of serendipity English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenet's, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire.

He first planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Riesling three years later.

The first wines from these young vines were tight and lean and showed the elegant spice and fruit characters for which this area was to become known.
