Winemaking Note

The dry, cool to mild climate of the Great Southern region is well suited to the production of a spicy Shiraz style of wine with great depth of flavour and structure. We endeavour through meticulous viticulture and wine production to produce a wine that will express its sense of place and coupled with selected tight grain French oak that supports rather than dominate the fruit. Our winemaking philosophy is simply to produce a wine that is in harmony with its elements; gaining complexity with time but first and foremost be imminently drinkable.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Plantagenet takes its name not only from its home, but also from its heritage. In 1968 in a stroke of serendipity English migrant Tony Smith, himself a descendent of the Plantagenet's, invested his small inheritance in a farm called Bouverie in Western Australia’s Plantagenet Shire.

He first planted Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Riesling three years later.

The first wines from these young vines were tight and lean and showed the elegant spice and fruit characters for which this area was to become known.
