More than 123 years after Alexander Campbell Johnston planted his first small vine cutting, the Johnston family still produce estate grown wines and operate one of Australia's oldest wineries- Pirramimma.

In 1914 the Johnston family purchased the adjacent property which included the Katunga Winery, cellars and vineyard. The fruit for this vintage came from our Katunga and Squatters Tank Vineyard, with both blocks sandy loam over marley red clay, interspersed with ironstone.

On the 18th April we night picked these excellent parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon at optimum flavour. Maturation was completed in 80% older French barriques and 10% old American to retain fruit freshness and 10% new French Quintessence barrels to impart a touch of cedar and spice.

5-Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

The 2007 Pirramimma ACJ has won the coveted Glenelly Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the prestigious 2011 International Wine and Spirit Competition. The wine a unique blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon has won this fantastic award above all other blended wines from across the globe. Named in honour of Pirramimma founder Alexander Campbell Johnston, the 2007 ACJ is only the second release of this limited production wine, the first being the Gold Medal winning 2004 vintage. Only produced if varietal parcels display outstanding character, the barrel select 2007 ACJ was limited to 500 dozen.

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
