For this rare release we hand picked exceptional fruit from 3rd generation grower Gary Oakley. whose family planted their first McLaren Vale vineyard in 1925. This exceptional parcel of Malbec was planted in fine sandy red brown loam, over silica, cemented conglomerate and red/yellow friable clays. The low yield of concentrated fruit offered from these vines in 2015 provided us the quality and finesse to release this wine under our Iconic Ironstone label.

Expert Reviews

20% fermented in new French barriques, 80% in a mix of used French and American oak, matured for 9 months. The barrel fermentation is accepted at face value, but quite possibly means the wine completed its fermentation in those barrels. This is unapologetically full-bodied, but has a power of satsuma and blood plum, blackberry and licorice fruit - and a slew of tannins. Rating 94 - Drink by 2030 - James Halliday, Date Tasted:

Winery Tasting Notes

This wonderfully perfumed wine displays a bouquet of violets, spicy blackberry and cherry ripe, with hints of smoky cedary oak and fruit cake.

The palate delivers intense blueberry , colossal kalamata olive, boysenberry, rhubarb pie and bramble, complemented by herbaceous notes, subtle nutty oak, all enveloped by silky soft tannins and great length of flavour.

The wine is very approachable in its youth, or will reward with careful cellaring.

5-Star Winery - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011 Edition

In 1892 Alexander Campbell Johnston planted the first small vine cuttings on his newly purchased 97 hectare property in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Alexander settled with his family on the property and proudly named it ‘Pirramimma’, an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘the moon and the stars’. More than 115 years and three generations later the Johnston Family still operates one of Australia’s oldest and proudest family owned and run wineries - Pirramimma. Making wines that range from the traditional to the innovative, Pirramimma is pure McLaren Vale. As one of the original landholders in the region the family is committed to its home and the regionally unique wines they produce.

Geoff Johnston, Grandson of Alexander, is the modern custodian of the family heritage. The Johnston family have grown the property from 97 hectares in 1892 to 250 hectares today. The family philosophy is to produce wines from estate grown grapes, ensuring the highest quality standards are met and the unique regional characters are displayed.

2011 Trophy Winner at International Wine and Spirit Competition (London, UK)

"With 120 years of winemaking history, it is a great achievement from the team to win any Trophy in such a competitive industry, but to win a major Trophy at one of the Worlds most important Wine Competitions is a tremendous result for McLaren Vale and Pirramimma" Geoff said.
