The components of the wine – 83.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11.4% Merlot, 3.8 % Cabernet Franc, 0.8% Petit Verdot and 0.1% Malbec– are identified in the vineyard and monitored in the barrel. As Peter Forrestal said recently “ Having lavished praise on the quality of the whites, I can’t help feeling that the reds are underrated. They’ve been pretty impressive for quite some time , but have been in the shadow of the whites. The red blocks on the vineyard are now 25 years old and show this maturity in increased concentration of flavour. New Release!

Expert Reviews

Light ruby red colour; this is an elegant, well-behaved wine with pleasing red fruits to the fore, but needs more structure and texture at this price. Rating 92 - Drink by 2020, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2010 vintage followed a run of excellent years of reds in Margaret River, ending up being an ideal growing season. There was a touch of rain when needed, mild conditions with no extremes of temperature and moderate crops with fine flavour for cabernet sauvignon.

The fruit is hand picked, chilled and then hand sorted before a gentle de –stemming. Individual parcels are kept separate and fermented in a number of different ways including open fermenters, closed fermenters and short and long post fermentationmaceration. After this the wine was racked into French oak where it was matured for 18 months.

The result is a great Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve. The 2010 is among the best produced at Pierro – distinctively Willyabrup in origin yet subtly different from similar blends produced in the area. It offers up gently brooding varietal fragrances and has greater concentration of flavour and more power than most, yet shows the

plushness of texture and approachability that is a mark of this wine.

There are ripe redcurrant and black plum aromatics, dense rich cassis, mulberry and bramble flavours. It is rich and smooth, finishing with a gentle grip from fine tannins,

Drinking well now but will age beautifully.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

The wines of Pierro are the culmination of passion, innovation, location, climate and time. Wherever our wines are enjoyed around the world today they invariably impart a tangible trace of their idyllic place of origin - warm southern climes, ancient soils, healthful vines and years of skilled hands-on viticulture and winemaking.

We are fortunate in that our beautiful Willyabrup vineyard is located in what is widely regarded as amongst the finest wine grape growing terrain in the world. Located in the heart of Western Australia's renowned Margaret River wine region, this far-flung locality has a viticultural pedigree second to none.

The district is situated in the continent's deep south-west, a relatively young region unsullied by the impact of human population and development. Fresh air, clean seas, unspoiled country and fruitful earth have been simple, priceless qualities here for millennia.

Surrounded by open water on three sides between capes Leeuwin and Naturaliste, the wine region is almost completely free of pollutants and contaminants. Year-round it is swept by pure, cool sea breezes, blowing in off the Indian and Southern Oceans. Mild, wet winters and sun-splashed summer seasons add to the viticultural equation.

A stable and predictable Mediterranean maritime climate is a vigneron's dream-come-true, and Margaret River has this too. The vineyard is situated on the north-facing south bank of the Willyabrup Brook, a pristine freshet that meanders down its namesake valley to the sea.

Couple this with soils ideally suited to the needs of classic varietal grapevines and we find ourselves in a kind of viticultural paradise. Amid this marvellous terroir sits Pierro Margaret River Vineyards.
