The 2009 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling is from an almost perfect growing season in Clare.

Slatey minerality, a hallmark of the Hanlin Hill Vineyard since the first vintage in 1979, combines with high natural acidity to produce a wine that is very drinkable in its youth, but has all the hallmarks of a great, long-lived Clare Valley Riesling. The 2009 Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling ranks alongside the truly great vintages of 1980, 1990 and 2002.

Expert Reviews

“Heady, floral and perfumed, with a musky scent of white flowers, lavender, lime juice, green apple and lemon pith, this very refined and naturally balanced riesling reveals layers of crystal-clear fruit underpinned by very fine, chalky phenolics. It’s beautifully focused, with a piercing presence of flavour that streamlines tightly towards a fresh, zesty finish of brittle, citrusy acids. Exceptionally long and classy.” Rating 97 - Jeremy Oliver (FEB/2010)

The mature vineyard is the key to the consistency of this wine. The palate has considerable depth and intensity to its array of ripe citrus fruit flavours, the finish well balanced. Rating 94 - Drink by 2019, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2009)

“I had this around the 94 mark at first though I dropped it back a touch later. It’s like drinking pure lime juice, though that chalkiness through the finish helps to soften it. Seriously crisp and intense. No idea really how it will age, though I would (even given the quality) be drinking this over the next couple of years. The more you drink it the more simple it seems - not unusual for a young riesling of course, but if it’s going to age well I’d like it to be more piercing. Gorgeous wine to drink young though - for definite.”Rating 93 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
