Overview

High in the hills surrounding the Barossa Valley lies Pewsey Vale, Eden Valley’s pioneer vineyard. Englishman Joseph Gilbert established the vineyard in 1847, trialing several grape varieties, including Riesling.

The site was later purchased by well known grazier Geoff Angas-Parsons. In 1961 Angas-Parsons called on friend Wyndham Hill Smith to assist him in developing the historic vineyard site. After researching old records and studying the vineyard’s climate, soil types and suitable clones, the pair believed the site provided the perfect conditions to develop delicate Rieslings in the Germanic style. In the ensuing 12 months, Wyndham established a contoured Riesling vineyard upon the slopes of the estate.

Today Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a single vineyard dedicated to the single variety – Riesling.

Expert Reviews

"This excellent riesling, with a pedigree as long as your arm, is one of the great bargains in Australian wine. It’s often discounted well below$20. Pewsey Vale has three wines, but this is the real deal – a classic young Aussie riesling. The colour is bright, light yellow, the nose opens with a touch of sulfury reduction that clears to reveal limes and dried wildflowers. The taste is firm and clean and youthfully undeveloped. It will age well, until at least 2020. Food: All pan-fried white-fleshed fish; cold prawns with mayonnaise; sushi and sashimi; fish or shellfish ceviche."

"sensational" "Pewsey Vale produces several rieslings, and apart from being an absolute bargain, this 2012 is sensational. It’s very pure, with lovely chalky acidity, a moreish mix of citrus and florals, adding weight to the palate. This lovely wine will continue to blossom for the next 10 years, although it’s easy to drink now with smoked salmon or other oily fish such as Western Australian sardines."Jane Faulkner, The Saturday Age, 24 November 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

The 2012 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling is a classic example of dry Eden Valley Riesling.

Colour

A pale straw with green hues.

Aroma

The wine shows intense fruit aromas of talcum, crushed stone and lemon lime fruit, with a hint of overlaying dried herb.

Palate

The palate shows great length and depth with lime, a hint of white flowers and fresh rosemary. The wine finishes with a fresh natural acidity that balances the flavour intensity and a minerality that will reward medium to long-term cellaring.

Winery Profile

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard has a long and illustrious past. It was first established by Joseph Gilbert, an Englishmen who landed in Australia in 1839 from Wiltshire’s Vale of Pewsey. Joseph purchased the property in 1847 and named it after his ancestral home.

By 1841, just two years after his arrival, Joseph, the 38 year old son of a well-heeled English landowner, had built a fine homestead and planted Pewsey Vale's first grapevines. The vines were of a table grape variety, but an idea was starting to take shape...

In 1847 Joseph planted a one-acre vineyard, establishing Eden Valley's pioneer vineyard and one of Australia's first high altitude, cool climate vineyards.

During the 1920s, Pewsey Vale succumbed to the fate of so many of Australia's early vineyards, falling into disuse as a result of the severe economic hardship of the Great Depression. The vineyard's potential was rediscovered at a time when only the history books recorded the existence of the original vineyards.

In 1961, Pewsey Vale's then-owner, Geoffrey Angas Parsons, became aware that his property had once incorporated the region's earliest vineyard. Excited by his discovery, he wasted no time in paying a visit to his good friend Wyndham Hill Smith of Yalumba with a proposal to restore the Pewsey Vale vineyard.

Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Rieslings are approachable wines renowned for their delicacy, finesse and intense lemon and lime characters. Grapes are left on the vines to achieve their full ripening potential, made possible by the cooler harvest conditions at the high altitude. Characteristics of Pewsey Vale Rieslings are the high levels of well-balanced acids which greatly contribute to the extraordinary ageing potential of these wines.

Pewsey Vale Vineyard Prima Riesling is an early harvest style of wine made from grapes picked three to four weeks before the rest of the vineyard. Chosen for their fine citrus flavours, the grapes were carefully selected when their natural sugar levels were near 10º baumé. The final wine has been made in a semi-dry style which retains some of the fruit sugars in balance with the chalky mineral acidity. The naturally lower alcohol of the wine further heightens its refreshing character.
