The Gryphon has a strong presence in Greek mythology as it was depicted pulling the chariot of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine.

It was because of this wine connection that Penley choose this symbol to represent their Merlot. A variety that is difficult and challenging to make.

"Wine is not what we do it’s who we are". Penley Estate's mission is to combine the winemaking heritage of their forebears with passion and a modern philosophy to create regional, varietal wines.

Expert Reviews

Concludes its fermentation and 20 months maturation in French oak (50% new). Lively cassis and redcurrant fruits lead the medium-bodied palate, continuing in an unbroken stream through to the finish and aftertaste; oak trembles on the brink, but retreats at the last moment. James Halliday, Rating 92, 27th July 2015

Winery Tasting Notes

Deep colour with strong red purple hues.

The bouquet is quite complex with distinct floral notes and ripe fruits complimented by nuances of sweet French vanilla and oak but with soft elegant length on the finish.

The flavours are complex with a blend of florals, berries and oak, not over ripe and porty but shows typical Coonawarra spicy berry flavour.
