The balance is a key in all Penley wines - balance with power and grace. This ensures that our wines will mature successfully in the bottle. Each wine will reflect this, but will also display seasonal variations and the regional influence that Coonawarra will have on the overall style. Heading down tanks, barrel fermentation in 50% new French oak and regular racking for clarity ensures a refined style.

Bright crimson-purple; Coonawarra should effortlessly produce quality merlot, but with a few exceptions (Penley included) it is either blended or not made in the first place. Here, the fruit is poised between red berry and black olive flavours, the only issue as of now the amount of French oak. Worth patience. Rating 89 - Drink by 2018, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2014).
Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2012 Gryphon Merlot reveals a nose that is a little closed, offering vague plum and earthy notes with a touch of eucalyptus. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is just a tad lean, with a modest amount of black fruit flavor and chewy tannins leading to a finish of medium persistence. Rating 84 - Drink by 2017, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (MAY/2014).
Winery Tasting Notes
Deep red in colour with a bright hue.
The bouquet is rich and complex with hints of violets, red berries and a fragrant aroma of creamy vanillin oak and Coonawarra`s unique earthiness.
Medium bodied with tight chalky acid accompanied by wild berry flavours and a complex leafiness. The tight grained French oak is assertive but will become more integrated and complex as the wine ages and enhances the earthiness and savouriness of the wine .A firm yet balance tannin structure matches the refinement and elegance of the wine.
Soft tannins and low acidity will provide the foundation for medium-term bottle age of 1-5 years.
