The Angel has been held in high esteem for over 20 years and has, in that time gained a loyal following. Each year at blending time, the top few barrels of Cabernet from the Graeme's blend get put aside and earn about 18 months of barrel time. These meticulously cared for wines are then bottled as "The Angel" to join the ranks of passing clouds best Cellaring wines.

This year, the winning fruit was from Serpentine - a warm climate, sub region of Bendigo.

Expert Reviews

Very good hue and depth for '11; the only vintage that dispensed with the cabernet franc, making it 100% cabernet sauvignon, and spent 2 years in French oak; cool-grown on a Bendigo vineyard near Serpentine, and has been made with great skill, the redcurrant and cassis fruit perfectly framed by fine tannins and subtle oak. Rating 94 - Drink by 2021 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JUL/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Concentrated, pure red currant and Mulberry fruit armoas with a touch of aniseed and spice follow on to the well balanced palate which shows attractive primary fruit with firm, fine tannins and acidity which will aid the longevity of this wine.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Originally established in 1974 by Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon, Passing Clouds at Bendigo is in a low rainfall area and the site was chosen to make great red wine with the lowest chemical inputs possible. No pesticides or insecticides are ever used in the vineyard. These practices are followed in our new cool climate vineyard at Musk, just outside of Daylesford in the Macedon Ranges. It is currently producing stunning pinot, chardonnay and sparkling. The winery has consistently produced medal winning wines with deep colours, rich flavours and a unique structure with excellent mouthfeel that place them with the very best Australian red wines. For instance Graeme’s Blend 2005 rates 93 points in James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
