Expert Reviews

“This is Neudorf’s second string Chardonnay and what a cracker it is. Smokey, toasty and grapefruit aromas turning nutty and mealy in the mouth with some butteriness. Fine and multi layered, long and seamless. Now to 2022. 95/100. Food: buttery crayfish.” Rating 95 - Huon Hooke, Sydney Morning Herald

“Very seductive Chardonnay with a rich, yet silken-smooth texture and flavours suggesting bran biscuit, toast, peach and grapefruit. Complete Chardonnay that is deliciously drinkable but seems likely to continue to give pleasure for many years ahead. The best vintage of this label that I can recall tasting. FIVE STARS 93/100.”Rating 93 - Bob Campbell MW

“With a nose of apricots, golden decision apples and guava along with nuances of butterscotch and lightly browned toast, the Neudorf Nelson Chardonnay 2012 is medium to full-bodied with a lovely satiny texture and barely detectable oak influence. It has a good amount of stone fruit and apple flavours offset by lively acid and finishes with very good length. Drink it now to 2017+. 90 points.” Rating 90 - Lisa Perotti Brown MW, Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

A gently persuasive wine with precise nutty aromas. It is finely crafted with sensitive handling of oak offering a background to the more fragrant, fleshy notes.

Despite going through a full malolactic ferment, at no stage does this wine become too overt or blowsy. The cool Moutere climate retains the acid to keep those toffee/caramel notes in check, creating a wine of dignity and freshness. Cellaring is definitely an option but by no means essential.

Our Chardonnays remind me of those novels and movies which sneak up on you. Utterly subtle and infinitely memorable.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Neudorf Vineyards is regarded as one of New Zealand's finest boutique wineries. Exporting to 16 countries, their wine is listed at some the world's greatest restaurants.

Neudorf's home plantings spill down a gentle north-facing slope overlooking a side branch of the Moutere Valley at the top of New Zealand's South Island. They also grow grapes on the stony alluvial area between the Waimea and Wai-iti rivers at Brightwater, on the Waimea plains south of Nelson.

Vineyard management is driven by the winemaker's desire for ripe flavours and concentrated fruit. A combination of high plant density (up to 5000 vines/hectare) and low production (down to one kilo per vine for Pinot Noir) helps achieve the quality of fruit to create long-lived, intense but elegant wines. New clonal material is consistently being evaluated.
