Overview

Chardonnay has been a real focus for us at Nautilus for some years now. Low yielding fruit is fermented in oak barrels, with indigenous yeasts and minimal malolactic fermentation. The wine has a pure mineral character with crisp apple and grapefruit notes and a beautiful long finish.

Expert Reviews

"A terrific expression of power delivered with supreme elegance. Aromatic and light but with an intensity that's most obvious in the wine's lingering finish. A seductive mix of citrus, stone fruit and nutty savoury characters." 95 points - Bob Campbell MW, Gourmet Traveller WINE, December 2011

"This chardonnay is so good you could match it with strawberry ice-cream and it would still taste great. Enjoy a glass with seared scallops and the earth may actually move a little." Bob Campbell MW, Your Home & Garden, January 2012

"This is a ripe and richly fruited style of chardonnay that offers plenty of fragrant melon and white stone fruits on the nose; some pear blossom too. The palate's smooth, supple and even. Bright, round, approachable and juicy chardonnay here - best drunk fresh and young."92 points Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

The 2010 Nautilus Chardonnay is pale straw in colour.

Aroma

The wine displays a wide range of aromas, including lemon blossom, summer apricots and cre`me brule´e.

Palate

The palate is well integrated, rich and complex, with refreshing acidity and flavours that gradually unfold into a lengthy, finely structured finish. This wine has a tight mineral structure in its youth and will develop a creamy texture as it matures.

Cellaring

While approachable in its youth this wine will further integrate and develop for 3 to 5 years from vintage.

Food Matching

Delicious with poussin and sweet corn custard.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

We are a small, family-owned winery based in the stunningly beautiful Marlborough region of New Zealand. We aim to craft delicious, food-friendly wines from the clean, cool and diverse valleys of Marlborough.

The striking Nautilus shell - its shape expressing natural beauty and mathematical perfection - is our inspiration to create a collection of expressive, textural, precisely crafted wines.

Our energetic and innovative viticultural and winemaking team takes the approach of blending several different fruit parcels to achieve layers of complexity in the wines, focusing on their texture and mouth-feel. Our state-of-the-art but small-scale winemaking facilities give them the tools to achieve this.

Whilst Nautilus wines can easily be enjoyed on their own, we believe they are even better when paired with delicious food and the philosophy of creating food-friendly wines is paramount for winemaker Clive Jones.
