Expert Reviews

Hand-picked fruit with a small portion of botrytis-affected material from the company's ‘Top Swamp Viognier' vineyard, WBP and barrel-fermented in 1 y.o. 500 L puncheons to 14.5% alc. and dryness, the wine aged 3 months in barrel on lees. Bright, light straw-golden colour, lighter on edge. The nose is soft and very fragrant with aromas of apricots, rose-petal florals and exotic spices, akin to Gewurztraminer. Dry to taste, powerful and rich flavours of spiced apricots and exotic florals are based on a smooth-textured, near unctuous, oily palate. Fine and crisp acid zing provides a linearity and along with noticeable alcohol power, the flavours are driven to a sustained finish with cut. The alcohol drive is on the edge, but there is plenty of fruit weight to carry it. This will develop over the next 3-4+ years. Rating 18.0+/20 Raymond Chan, Oct 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

Exuberant aromas of apricots and vanilla lead into a luscious palate packed full of flavour power and concentration.

The minerality of this single vineyard wine shines through with a vibrancy and energy which belies its rather large 15% alcohol.

Made in the style of the famous wines of Condrieu there are additional layers of green apple and hazelnut to complement the stone fruit characters and luxurious richness.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Discovered in 1769, over two hundred years in the making, classic wine of the new world.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War we were convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind we began planting our first vines in 1993. Today Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer.Driven by this blueprint our white varieties have been carefully placed high on the exposed volcanic hilltops of Man O’ War so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.

With the belief that the greatest wines of the world are made in the vineyard, each small parcel of vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Our winemaking team is provided with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War. Our wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture.
