Expert Reviews

Flagship Chardonnay from a top Waiheke vintage. Plenty of power and masses of flavour all supported by tangy acidity. The wine has surprising and appealing minerality plus gobs of ripe tree fruit and savoury yeast lees and spicy oak flavours. Rating 93 - Bob Campbell MW,

The 2010 Valhalla Chardonnay has moderate toasty/cedary, apricot and melon notes over roasted almond and peach kernel. Full bodied, rich and satiny with great concentration, it has a nice acid line that continues through the long finish. Drink it now through 2015+. Rating 90+ - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, (OCT/2011)

The 2010 Valhalla Chardonnay has layers of tropical fruits, stone fruit, and hazelnut, mineral and complex toast/smoke characters.

The palate is all about elegance and discreet power with silken texture and vibrant acidity framing a clean fresh uncluttered palate. The wine finishes with its hallmark grapefruit bitterness.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Discovered in 1769, over two hundred years in the making, classic wine of the new world.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War we were convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind we began planting our first vines in 1993. Today Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer.Driven by this blueprint our white varieties have been carefully placed high on the exposed volcanic hilltops of Man O’ War so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.

With the belief that the greatest wines of the world are made in the vineyard, each small parcel of vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Our winemaking team is provided with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War. Our wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture.
