2010 vintage was superb for Waiheke with excellent mid summer heat, little or no rain and relatively cool nights throughout the growing season. The vineyards that make up the 2010 Man O’ War Chardonnay are those which are predominantly high on the hill tops with a high quantity of volcanic deposits making up the top soils. These vineyards produce wines which are fresh and full of minerality so 70% of the wine was fermented in tank to preserve that character whilst the remaining portion was fermented in old oak barrels to provide extra weight and texture. Chardonnay is hand harvested and whole bunch pressed before the un-racked, cloudy juice undergoes a wild fermentation. The wines are then left to evolve over the winter without disturbance of the lees. The wines are sulphured in the Spring to prevent Malolactic fermentation from taking place and bottled prior to the following harvest.

Expert Reviews

The 2010 Chardonnay gives pronounced notes of ripe nectarines and golden delicious apples with supporting aromas of toasty oak and cashews. Full bodied with a silken texture, it gives plenty of stone fruit flavor with notable oak influence and a long nutty finish. Drinking now, it should cellar to 2015. Rating 89 -Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, (OCT/2011)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Discovered in 1769, over two hundred years in the making, classic wine of the new world.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War we were convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind we began planting our first vines in 1993. Today Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer.Driven by this blueprint our white varieties have been carefully placed high on the exposed volcanic hilltops of Man O’ War so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.

With the belief that the greatest wines of the world are made in the vineyard, each small parcel of vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Our winemaking team is provided with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War. Our wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture.
