Expert Reviews

Rich, intense red wine that's a mix of fruit (plum, raspberry, red berry) and savoury (mixed herbs, toast) flavours. Powerful and complex red wine with impressive cellaring potential. Waiheke Island is rapidly earning a reputation as a Syrah hot spot. Rating 93 - Bob Campbell MW

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

Classical in style the 2009 Dreadnought shows the lifted aromas of speck and peat typical of Man O’ War Dreadnought Syrah and showcases the riper fruit spectrum of the variety with overt blue berries and black pepper notes.

Palate

The palate is elegant with supple fruit, vibrant acidity and a large presence of fine grained tannins emulating the structure of classical Northern Rhone. Stylish, finely balanced and rewarding in its youth we see the 2009 Dreadnought developing gracefully in age as the fine boned structure becomes more apparent and great complexity ensues.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Discovered in 1769, over two hundred years in the making, classic wine of the new world.

Over two hundred years after Cook first sighted Man O’ War we were convinced that world class wine could be grown here. Throwing caution to the wind we began planting our first vines in 1993. Today Man O’ War consists of 150 acres of vines planted in 76 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate.Every single block bears the footprints, and sometimes the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines. Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer.Driven by this blueprint our white varieties have been carefully placed high on the exposed volcanic hilltops of Man O’ War so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While our red varieties are draped down precipitously steep sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.

With the belief that the greatest wines of the world are made in the vineyard, each small parcel of vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand, then vinified separately, fusing classic Old World techniques with innovative New World ideas. Our winemaking team is provided with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War. Our wines are presented in two collections that represent our hallmark elegance, balance and texture.
