The Montevecchio range is inspired by the everyday drinking wines of Italy which are generally fresh and vibrant - often regional field blends - and designed to be enjoyed in their youth, while still showing structure and texture. Components and percentages of blends will vary from vintage to vintage, depending on the season, but Montevecchio wines are always made from Italian grape varieties.

Expert Reviews

Took a sip of this and thought ‘Yep! This is exactly the kind of wine we need to make more of!’ It’s a blend of Nero d’Avola, Negroamaro, Lagrein and Sagrantino.

Strong colour. Meaty and a bit stinky (reductive), pepper, blue and purple fruit, dried herb, licorice. Medium bodied, dry, interesting, complex. Lovely balance throughout. Rubbery reduction runs through it, but as a kind of smoke trail from a great start, to a solid finish. The blend of grapes imbues it with a sophistication that belies its price. Love it. Rating 92 - Drink by 2017, Gary Walsh, (APR/2014).

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma of vibrant raspberry and purple fruits are balanced perfectly with a savoury meatiness and refreshing acidity.

This medium-bodied wine has plenty of supple fruit, soft tannins and is designed to be enjoyed in it's youth.

Winery Profile

From the meticulously tended Chalmers Heathcote vineyard comes the Montevecchio range of wines. The site is perfectly situated on the east facing slope of the Mt Camel Range, comprised of the famous red earth of the region. The twenty hectare vineyard has been planted to thirteen different varieties, predominantly Italian. The name Montevecchio translates literally as ‘old mountain’ referring to the ancient Cambrian origins of these soils. The Chalmers’ years of experience in viticulture, and their passion for Italian varieties is matched by the care and expertise of winemaker Sandro Mosele. Sandro's minimal intervention style allows the varieties and terroir to shine through in these food friendly wines.
