Chief Winemaker, Andrew Wigan, was mentored by Peter Lehmann, and was at his side when the winery was founded in 1979. He has had a hand in every Peter Lehmann wine since. From the shallow rocky soils of the Eden Valley – one of the great Riesling sites of the world – the Wigan Riesling has become one of Australia’s most celebrated wines having been named ‘Best Riesling in the World’ by International Wine and Spirit Competition six times since 1991, and being awarded over 80 trophies and countless medals since its inaugural vintage as ‘Wigan’ in 2003 (previously ‘Reserve’ Riesling). A mature wine with remarkable youth on the palate, Wigan proves Peter Lehmann’s belief that Riesling is indeed the most noble of white varieties. Traditionally released as a five year old wine.

Expert Reviews

Bright, light green-straw; the class of the wine is obvious from the start, yet (paradoxically, perhaps) is less intense and brilliantly fruited than the best vintages under this great label. The toast on the bouquet has an uncharacteristic whiff of kerosene, which used to be seen as part of all mature rieslings.Rating 93 - Drink by 2018 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour is vibrant lemon with a green tinge.

The bouquet shows classical Eden Valley lime juice characters and hints of freshly baked bread and honey which is a characteristic of bottle development.

The palate is pristine and finishes dry with zesty minerality. While already showing excellent development from five years in the bottle, the wine will continue to gather richness and complexity with another 5-10 years of careful storage in a cool area.

Food Matching

A superb accompaniment to oysters, shellfish pan-fried white fish fillets or a roast chicken.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.
