Overview

Eight Songs Shiraz was born of our love of art and music and inspired by an operatic work, ‘Eight Songs for Mad King’, first performed in the Barossa in 1993.

The Barossa stands amongst the great wine regions of the world. From this region, Shiraz can express diversity in flavour, style and texture. The diverse terroir of our growers’ Barossa vineyards is reflected in the character of our wines. Soils, elevations and vine age vary from one vineyard to the next. The heart of Eight Songs lies in the old Shiraz vineyards spread across the landscape of the Barossa.

With Eight Songs we show an elegant and distinctly softer side to Barossa Shiraz. Fermented and matured in 100% new French oak hogsheads the palate shows dark plums, choc/ mocha notes with hints of vanillin undertones. The seamless integration of opulent fruit and velvety tannins creates an elegant expression of Barossa Shiraz at its sensuous best.

Expert Reviews

Strong, healthy colour; both the bouquet and palate are complex, offering a range of dark/black berry fruits and integrated but noticeable French oak; the palate has excellent line and length, the finish a high point of the wine. Rating 94 - Drink by 2030 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma

A densely coloured Shiraz from an exceptional vintage showing hints of dark chocolate and black forest fruits.

Palate

The palate is rich and soft, finishing with very fine tannins in the Eight Songs tradition.

Cellaring

While drinking beautifully now the wine can be cellared with confidence for a few more years if desired.

Serving Suggestion

It is recommended that it be carefully decanted 2-3 hours before serving to allow the wine to open up and leave any sediment behind.

Eight Songs Shiraz sings with rare roast beef, rich casseroles, beef and game pies, and of course, a great aged cheddar.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

In the face of a serious overproduction of grapes and the real possibility of growers facing financial ruin, Peter Lehmann found some investment partners, established a consortium and built the Peter Lehmann Wines winery. It was 1979.The first vintage was processed in 1980 and in 1982 the winery was formally named Peter Lehmann Wines. From then on, its wines have been marketed under the Peter Lehmann Wines label.

As an experienced winemaker, Peter Lehmann was all too aware of the challenges facing a young winery in a competitive market. Growth was well planned, slow and steady.

Initially, the winery facility was built to process fruit purchased from the local growers. Carefully and strategically, the Peter Lehmann Wines operation moved on from the bulk wine market to become a producer of premium bottled wines with a well-deserved international reputation.

As well as purchasing grapes from about 185 local independent growers, Peter Lehmann Wines has its own vineyards, which produce about 2% of its requirements. The famous Barossa wine region is a little over an hour by car north of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. The Barossa comprises two regions, the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, and these regions encompass a myriad of sub-districts.

The care and consideration which Peter Lehmann Wines brings to the selection of grapes enable the winery to produce a wide range of distinctive, award-winning and internationally acclaimed wines.

Our wines are created from grapes purchased from about 165 carefully selected independent growers as well as grapes grown in the four company-owned vineyards. Many of our growers’ families have worked the same vineyards for five and, in some cases, six generations. These Barossa vignerons tend to around 900 individual vineyards that run the gamut of the Barossa, through Lyndoch, Vine Vale, Light Pass, Stonewell, Greenock, Ebenezer and the Eden Valley.
