Overview

The wine name 'Savitar' refers to a mythical dragon-like monster. 'Sui magna cauda caeli astra verrit eaque ad terram jecit'

'His great tail swept the stars from the sky and flung them to the earth'.

Mitolo delivers wines that express purity of varietal flavour, show elegance of structure with soft tannins whilst being rich, powerful and complex. All the grapes are picked on flavour ripeness which contributes to the soft, ripe tannins and vibrant fruit which is a key characteristic of all Mitolo wines. Savitar, the flagship Mitolo Shiraz, is powerful yet elegant, opulent, brooding and intense.

Expert Reviews

Aged 14 months in 100% new oak (90% French / 10% American), the 2009 Savitar Shiraz has a deep garnet-purple color and an earthy / savory nose with notes of tree bark, meat, tobacco and black truffles with a warm mulberry and black plum core plus a fragrant hint of sandalwood. Full bodied with plenty of mouth-filling savory and blackberry flavors, it’s well supported with very crisp acid and a medium level of chewy tannins, finishing long. Still a little tight, it should drink best 2013 to 2020+. Rating 93+, Drink 2013 - 2020 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, eRobertParker.com (FEB/2012)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

For such a young winery, Mitolo’s history is rich. It’s one studded with success, wide acclaim, and – most importantly – truly memorable wines. But that’s only to be expected from a winery which, since the very first day, has been motivated by three potent words:

Purity. Elegance. Power.

Those were the guiding principles Frank Mitolo wrote down when he created the winery in 1999. With his Italian heritage and a family history of working the land, Frank was only interested in pursuing excellence. And the results were there immediately in the release of the first Mitolo wine - the 2000 G.A.M. - named after Frank’s children Gemma, Alexander and Marco.

Attracted by this commitment to only create wines of outstanding quality, acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer joined Mitolo as a partner in 2001. With grapes sourced from two of Australia’s premier wine regions, Mclaren Vale and the Barossa Valley, Frank and Ben now work tirelessly to surpass their already impressive achievements. Mitolo Wines, praised by some of the world’s toughest critics, are now enjoyed in more than 20 countries around the world.

And that is just the start.
