A fresh vibrant Semillon site which is to the far east of the Wallcliffe subregion. Here the soils have higher clay content which is more mottled grey than orange laterite derived. They hold water and subsequently acid a little better giving natural citrus balance in the flavour profile.
One of the older sites for Sauvignon Blanc in Margaret River it was planted in 1983 and is literally on the banks of the river. The cane pruned vines face east on a gradual slope with a north south orientation. The roots are deep into a loamy soil that is reinforced with pea gravel, the flavours indicative of a long tap root that doesn’t require watering.
Bright green-straw; has all the usual Margaret River attributes, but with more generosity than usual; the many herbal and tropical components are so fused it is a pointless exercise to pick any out for special comment. Just enjoy this hedonistic wine. Rating 93 - Drink by 2014 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2013)
Aroma/Palate
The lifted nose of fresh grass and passion-fruit pulp leads to a palate showing tight fruit structure. Kiwifruit and green gooseberry flavours make way for some pithy acidthat, carries an apple-crunch through to a lingering finish.
This moreish wine shows plenty of ripe fruit characters from a warmer 2012 Margaret River vintage.
McHenry Hohnen Vintners was established in 2004 and is a venture between pioneer Margaret River winemaker David Hohnen and his brother-in-law and vine-grower, Murray McHenry.
Their aim is to produce a range of wines which truly reflect their site and varietal origins with all the grapes for the venture sourced from family owned vineyards in the southern part of the region.
McHenry Hohnen vineyards are cared for according to the time honoured principle of common sense. Through recognising the importance of soil biology, healthy vines are grown, which in turn, produce grapes to create wines which are expressive of their particular site. The approach to winemaking is simple – close observation, careful nurturing, with minimal intervention. The resulting wines show outstanding varietal and vineyard integrity, with balance, harmony and great character.
The wines produced by McHenry Hohnen reflect Margaret River's strong suit with Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties, along with a focus on alternative varieties which are performing very well in the region's Mediterranean climate – Zinfandel, Roussanne, Marsanne, Mataro and Grenache.
Winemaking is handled by Trent Carroll, with mentoring and support from David Hohnen.
