Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Calgardup Brook vineyard in the south of the Margaret River region. The Calgardup is a westerly flowing stream; hence the site is open to the sea breezes that have a significant influence on the vineyards of the Leeuwin Naturaliste Ridge, the hills that connect the two Capes on the south and north of the region. It’s sandy, schisty soils are well weathered. These Chardonnay vines run east west on a slightly sloping northern aspect getting less direct sunlight and allowing for leaner citrus fruit characters.
Hand picked fruit from the heavily maritime influenced Calgardup Brook vineyard. Natural ferment. Time on lees in French oak barrels. Hands off. Mealy, cinnamon-on-porridge aromas with melon fruit. Creamy textured wine, medium bodied, gently spicy. Really enjoyable flavour spectrum, some leesy-almond bass lines and wet stone-like minerality. All integrated, supple and very long across the palate. There’s great personality here; definitive flavour and texture is the experience. Excellent. 95 points, Mike Bennie - www.winefront.com.au posted 12th February 2013
Aroma
Complex aromas of guava and fig with a squeeze of strawberry.
Palate
White peach and feijoa are subtle on the palate but make her all the more attractive. A dusting of new French oak puts cinnamon on a pie crust that's layered with kiwifruit meringue on a lemon curd. There's almond meal with a touch of lime peel garnishing; this is a sweet but sharp tasting wine. Underneath all this there is a minerality and purity from natural ferment that suggests she carries a whip.
McHenry Hohnen Vintners was established in 2004 and is a venture between pioneer Margaret River winemaker David Hohnen and his brother-in-law and vine-grower, Murray McHenry.
Their aim is to produce a range of wines which truly reflect their site and varietal origins with all the grapes for the venture sourced from family owned vineyards in the southern part of the region.
McHenry Hohnen vineyards are cared for according to the time honoured principle of common sense. Through recognising the importance of soil biology, healthy vines are grown, which in turn, produce grapes to create wines which are expressive of their particular site. The approach to winemaking is simple – close observation, careful nurturing, with minimal intervention. The resulting wines show outstanding varietal and vineyard integrity, with balance, harmony and great character.
The wines produced by McHenry Hohnen reflect Margaret River's strong suit with Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties, along with a focus on alternative varieties which are performing very well in the region's Mediterranean climate – Zinfandel, Roussanne, Marsanne, Mataro and Grenache.
Winemaking is handled by Trent Carroll, with mentoring and support from David Hohnen.
