Expert Reviews

Have not seen a Mawson’s for some time. Could well be a re-release of a brand formerly under the Yalumba banner (now under Hill Smith Family Vineyards). Sauvignon Blanc from Wrattonbully.

It’s a sauvignon blanc with up-front appeal. There’s even some fruit sweetness here. Passionfruit and hay but generally in the tropical fruit flavour spectrum. Intensity of flavour is above average. Commercial style but very good at it. Rating 88 - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front (JAN/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Pale straw in colour.

The Mawson’s Cape Denison Sauvignon Blanc is a vivacious wine that opens with passionfruit and lemon curd aromas that unfold into intriguing scents of dried herbs finishing with an elegant perfume of lemon blossom.

The wine is elegant and intense with crisp acidity, a refined pairing of grapefruit pith and citrus punch. The palate excites with freshness and vibrancy, yet full and lingering.

Food Matching

Mawson’s Cape Denison Sauvignon Blanc is best consumed in its youth, try with lemongrass steamed barramundi splashed with soy sauce.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
