Expert Reviews

Interesting wine under the Mawson’s label. Formerly a Yalumba brand, now under Hill Smith Family Vineyards.

Interesting because it’s so smooth and well pitched. It’s the kind of wine many merlot drinkers are looking for – except that it’s cabernet sauvignon. Soft, mulberried fruit with hits of tobacco, eucalypt, blackcurrant and black olive. Aromatic, well-ripened, medium-bodied (just) and ever-so-soft. Rating 89 - Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front (JAN/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Crimson red.

Mawson’s Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 displays vibrant and intense notes of blackcurrants, cedar and spice.

The palate is lively and fresh, opening with warm deep flavours of mocha and chocolate, which develop into blackcurrants and dark cherry. The wine is structural yet supple, finally finishing with lasting notes of cedar and leather.

Food Matching

The wine is an excellent match with slow roasted lamb shoulder.

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
