The Vineyard

Wrattonbully is situated about 300 km southeast of Adelaide and about 30 km north of Coonawarra. The climate is a balance between those of the viticultural regions of Coonawarra and Padthaway as the average summer temperature is one degree warmer than the former and one degree cooler than the latter. Our vineyards are sited on gentle slopes with rows running predominantly east-west. The soils of the vineyards are well drained, being in the main the classic terra rossa of red brown earths over limestone, the lodestone of red winemaking.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Red 5 Star Winery -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion Edition 2011

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
