McLaren Vale Cabernet was the staple variety that brought Marienberg under the spotlight during its early years. They were formidable wines with a distinguished pedigree. I’ve used lightly charred French oak to recreate that style. This wine is full and firm with solid texture and drying tannins. It’s an imposing wine for fine occasions.

Winery Tasting Notes

The appearance is deep opaque red with vibrant purple hues around the rim with viscous alcohol legs on the glass.

The bouquet is intense with alcohol spirit, cedar wood and earthy mushrooms immediately obvious. There is ripe blackcurrant richness and a lingering herbaceous, forest floor character. The aromas continue to grow as the wine opens up in the glass revealing lovely oak and leafy herbs.

The palate is powerful and full with firm dry tannins giving solid structure and great length. The Rozaklis vineyard in Aldinga produces long living wines that can carry big oak and develop slowly over many years. This wine is just starting to show the rich dark chocolate character that is typical of the region.

Food Matching

From a hearty Guinness pie to a grand Beef Wellington this is a wine for complex flavoured meat dishes and rich sauces. Steak dishes from any cut make a great match and decanting prior to serving is recommended to allow it to open up at room temperature.

Cellaring Potential

This is a classic McLaren Vale wine which will deliver excellent drinking over a decade of cellaring. From release it offers an intense flavour experience which will continue to develop and gain complexity as it matures in bottle.

Winery Profile

Marienberg Wines

was established by Ursula Pridham in1966 and she is accredited as being Australia’s first female winemaker. The winery burst to prominence with the 1969 Cabernet Shiraz winning Gold at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. By 1976 Marienberg had become “one of the best known small wineries in the country” (Evans, Len. – Australian Complete Book of Wine). The wines became recognised for their distinctive oak characteristics.

In 1991 after a close association with Ursula Pridham, Marienberg became part of my families Hill Wine Group and continued to win accolades and build international recognition for full flavoured wines with powerful oak influence.

From vintage 1992 until 2001 Grant Burge was consultant winemaker and the wines achieved critical and commercial success including the export markets of USA Canada, UK and Singapore.

2014 sees a return to McLaren Vale and the Hill family with the wines being made by Chris Hill in the traditional style of big flavour, big oak and powerful impact.
