Perhaps the most texturally enticing of all the grape varieties, and a total passion for the team at Mahi. Again their aim is to make wines of the earth, showing complex savouriness characters aligned with both red and black fruit notes.
Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2013 Pinot Noir shows a gorgeous nose of red and black cherries, wild thyme and lavender with hints of violets and underbrush. Medium-bodied with and elegantly fruited with red berry and earthy flavors supported by fine-grained tannins and just enough acid, it finishes long. Rating 91 - Drink by 2018, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (DEC/2014).
Bright strawberry and raspberry, touch of smoky reduction, perfume of dried herbs and light oak spice. Bright and lively in the mouth with almost lemony acidity, fine grained tannin, fresh red fruit flavours and good length. A touch bitter on the finish, but nice structure and shape. Rating 89 - Drink by 2019, Gary Walsh, winefront.com.au (OCT/2014).
Aroma/Palate
A fragrant, spicy bouquet, this wine is mouthfilling, ripe and supple with good complexity. Rich cherries and plums combine with soft tannins to give a well-rounded finish.
This year Brian Bicknell celebrates the making of his twenty-forth vintage, an achievement that has seen him accumulate experience in not only Marlborough, but also in Chile, France and Hungary.
Returning to Marlborough permanently in 1996, Brian identified that individual sites within the region produced markedly different characters. At a time when Marlborough was considered to be producing wines that hid the diversity of the region, Mahi was born. Brian’s vision to showcase the differences and complexities that these terroirs offer, has been exceeded with every single vineyard release.
