While making some serious classic, dry Australian-styled Rieslings over a decade in the Adelaide Hills (cooler and wetter, and later-ripening than either Eden or Clare), Peter Leske(from La Linea) was struck by the suitability of the Riesling fruit from specific Hills vineyards for that European style. It had to be done! – and so in concert with colleagues and partners David LeMire and Jason Quin, in 2008 the first Vertigo ‘25GR’ Riesling was made, from a mature, high-altitude site first made into wine by Peter in 1998.

Winery Tasting Notes

It shows powerful varietal fruit in the lemon/lime juice spectrum, with a floral and tropical background. If you close your eyes you’ll see the hints of musk and roses that can sometimes be evident in fine Hills Riesling.

The grape-derived sweetness (which is retained when we turn the cooling on to stop the ferment from going to completion) is balanced by the tight acidity, which in turn is supported by the low alcohol. When the acid and slight spritz of retained CO2 from fermentation kick in together on the tail, the two provide the zesty, mouth-watering finish which is drier than might be expected.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

La Linea is a partnership of experienced wine industry professionals, including Peter Leske and David LeMire MW. Peter was among the first to recognise the potential of Tempranillo in Australia, and his knowledge of it is reflected in the three wine styles made from the variety: Tempranillo Rose, the Tempranillo blended from several Adelaide Hills vineyards, and Norteno, from a single vineyard at the northern end of the Hills. Two Rieslings are produced under the Vertigo label: TRKN (short for trocken), and the off-dry 25GR (25 g/l residual sugar). James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
