" The Leeuwin cabernets are finally starting to sing with greater consistency and resonance as the work that has been done in the vineyard and winery pays dividends. This is a beauty, and an excellent follow-up to the terrific 2008. Blackcurrant aromas, with a dusty, cedars overlay of oak, dark plums and light leaf. The palate is seamless and balanced, with a silky texture created by supple tannins and fine-grained oak."
Rating 95 - Ray Jordan, The West Weekend Magazine, February 1, 2014
" The new era of Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernets is an exciting one in which classy fruit contrasts crunchy vibrancy and deep black-fruited concentration. Well integrated tannins make for immediate approachability while promising great longevity."Rating 94 -Tyson Stelzer, WBM February 2014
“Bright ruby. Red fruit liqueur, pipe tobacco and mint on the highly perfumed nose. Offers sweet redcurrant and cherry flavors that pick up spiciness and smokiness with air. Pliant, focused and energetic on the finish, with good cut and lasting notes of mocha and candied rose.” Rating 92 - Josh Raynolds, The International Wine Cellar, July/August 2013
“A firm and crisp red, with chewy tannins, featuring plenty of dark berry and currant flavors and a hint of sassafras. Delivers a long and expressive finish.”Rating 90 - Wine Spectator, August 2013
“4 stars, Excellent. Fresh crisp blue fruit that is full of vitality on the finish. Balanced, vibrant wine. Elegance from start to lingering finish. Classy, Medium-ish bodied.” Ch’ng Poh Tiong, The Margaret River Report, June 2013
Colour
Dark ruby red with a black core.
Aroma
A concentrated blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit spectrum, paired with aromats of star anise, cumin, lifted violets, bay leaf and dried tobacco. Delicate crème brulee, mocha and cedar notes offer layers to an incredibly vibrant and youthful nose.
Palate
A sweet and concentrated fruit core leads to a medium to full weighted palate. The fruit shows red currants and cherries. Fine silky tannins are woven through a mineral mid palate, which is integrated and finishes with great fruit length, density and a fine acid line.
Leeuwin Estate has sixty-two acres of Chardonnay vines divided into eight distinct parcels. The soil and slopes of the plantings differ in each area and the cultural aspects of the viticulture are tailored to each parcel, therefore varying slightly. Since the 1980 vintage Leeuwin Estate has adhered to vertical training and leaf removal to present the Chardonnay fruit properly to the light. The soil management has remained the same since inception. Variations and deficiencies in the soils of individual blocks have not been completely corrected so that the wines reflect the soil wherever possible.
Each plot is harvested separately and kept separate throughout the winemaking and some of the maturation programme. The wines reflect these differences intimately and unfailingly from the beginning. For example, Block 20, the "Front Gate" Chardonnay, always is the basis and the backbone of the "Art Series" wine. The young wine begins with true varietal power of great delicacy which then actually requires up to 12 months of lees contact in new French Oak in order to draw out the complexity; losing none of that essential balance in the process.
The "Art Series" represents Leeuwin's most opulent and age-worthy wines. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian Artists. The "Art Series" wines have obtained outstanding reviews and classifications, the Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons in particular continue to be collector wines and command lofty prices at auctions the world over.
Today the wines of Leeuwin Estate continue to be prized amongst collectors. Australia's largest wine auction house, Langton's, classifies Leeuwin's "Art Series" Chardonnay in the top "exceptional" category of Australia's best performers, and the "Art Series" Cabernet as a wine of excellence.
