The “Art Series” represents Leeuwin’s finest wines from each vintage. The winemakers have always selected the optimum fruit, transforming it into Leeuwin’s highest quality and age-worthy wines. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian Artists.
“Vivid deep crimson; restrained and understated, the bouquet offers a tantalising glimpse of red and black fruits, cigar box and a little briary complexity; the palate is finely detailed, and while elegant, contains its inherent power and longevity with ease.”Rating 95 -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2013 Edition
Outstanding 18.5 points (95) "... a complete makeover in the vineyards has produced more even ripeness and permitted earlier harvesting to capture the hallmarks of the variety, elevating this wine to its rightful position alongside the estate's famous Art Series Chardonnay. Leeuwin's Art Series philosophy is to represent its finest, most ageworthy wines, and its Cabernet now confidently meets this brief." Rating 95 - Decanter Magazine, Panel Tasting, November 2012 Edition
“Old school vibe going on – easy to enjoy the lithe, medium bodied frame, feathery tannins and dark, sweet fruit, but there’s lashings of choc-mint/leafiness taking one back a generation in style. Still, elegant and svelte, with great ageing potential.”93 Points - Mike Bennie, WBM, April 2013
"Bright ruby-red. Lively and precise on the nose, displaying scents of red- and blackcurrant, cherry, tobacco and rose. Juicy and tightly focused, with very good depth and energy to its red fruit and spicecake flavors. Shows a refreshingly bitter quality on the finish, along with suave floral and red fruit preserve notes." 92 Points - Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, July 2012
Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2008 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is scented of creme de cassis, mulberries, pencil lead and cloves over nuances of sandalwood and cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied with crisp acid and a medium level of very finely grained tannins, it fills the mouth with evolved berry and savory / earthy flavors, finishing long and layered. Approachable now, it should continue to cellar to 2019+. Rating 91+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown, eRobertParker.com, August 2012
“ A welcome mineral note weaves through the cherry and spice flavors in this smooth, broad red, lingering effectively on the generous finish. Best from 2014 through 2018.”90 Points - Wine Spectator, May 2012
Colour
Dark red with a black core.
Aroma
The bouquet is a marriage of classical Cabernet characters featuring a vibrant fruit spectrum of cherries and blackcurrants. Bay leaf, dried sage, anise and cassia bark formulate depth on the nose. Lifted lavender, roasted coffee bean and hints of cedar enhances the overall complexity.
Palate
A gentle entry leads to a generously textured mid palate, finishing fine, with long and silky tannins. Classical blackcurrant and cherry fruits meet with dusty well integrated oak. Subtleties of cloves, anise and cumin seed are also woven throughout the palate.
Leeuwin Estate has sixty-two acres of Chardonnay vines divided into eight distinct parcels. The soil and slopes of the plantings differ in each area and the cultural aspects of the viticulture are tailored to each parcel, therefore varying slightly. Since the 1980 vintage Leeuwin Estate has adhered to vertical training and leaf removal to present the Chardonnay fruit properly to the light. The soil management has remained the same since inception. Variations and deficiencies in the soils of individual blocks have not been completely corrected so that the wines reflect the soil wherever possible.
Each plot is harvested separately and kept separate throughout the winemaking and some of the maturation programme. The wines reflect these differences intimately and unfailingly from the beginning. For example, Block 20, the "Front Gate" Chardonnay, always is the basis and the backbone of the "Art Series" wine. The young wine begins with true varietal power of great delicacy which then actually requires up to 12 months of lees contact in new French Oak in order to draw out the complexity; losing none of that essential balance in the process.
The "Art Series" represents Leeuwin's most opulent and age-worthy wines. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian Artists. The "Art Series" wines have obtained outstanding reviews and classifications, the Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons in particular continue to be collector wines and command lofty prices at auctions the world over.
Today the wines of Leeuwin Estate continue to be prized amongst collectors. Australia's largest wine auction house, Langton's, classifies Leeuwin's "Art Series" Chardonnay in the top "exceptional" category of Australia's best performers, and the "Art Series" Cabernet as a wine of excellence.
