Winery Tasting Notes

Bright, pale straw on release.

Powerful aromas of passionfruit and blackcurrant with hints of grapefruit.

The palate is pleasingly rich and concentrated with a well balanced acidity that leads to a lingering finish.

Cellaring Potential

Released September 2010. Enjoy now and over the next 2 years.

Food Matching

Enjoy with seafood, white meats, ethnic cuisine or as a bracing aperitif.

Winemaking Notes

The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the evening and transported immediately to the winery for processing to minimise oxygen contact. Fermentation was controlled at low temperatures to retain the freshness and zing of the fruit. Limited release of 550 cases.

Medals & Trophies

Pure Gold Medal, Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2010 for the third vintage in a row.

Grays Tasting Panel Review

A beautiful classy sauvignon blanc showing great complexity. Grapefruit and tropical flavours are all in balance with a beautiful palate. Minerality and a hint of chalkiness add to this wine. It's tight and stands above the mundane sauvignon blancs that are on the market. (22/DEC/2010)

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Lake Chalice Wines is one of the few remaining privately and locally owned wine companies in New Zealand and is located in the country's main wine-growing region, Marlborough.

Launched in 1989 on a 11ha (28 acre), stony paddock in Rapaura, Wairau Valley, Lake Chalice Wines now owns four key vineyard sites, as well as sourcing fruit from several carefully selected contract growers.

Founders Chris Gambitsis and Phil Binnie, who were joined in 1998 by winemaker Matt Thomson, share a simple philosophy: to make quality varietal wines from Marlborough grapes.

The Karearea or NZ falcon emblem features on the Lake Chalice Wines' label. In a land with no native mammals, this rare, endemic raptor has always flown fearlessly above the rest. Lake Chalice Wines is a proud sponsor of the Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust, dedicated to preserving New Zealand's raptors.
