The Cortese grapes are handpicked towards the end of September. Grapes are destemmed, delicately pressed and the skins are removed. Must is decanted at a low temperature and alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature. The wine is left on the lees for 30days and is matured in stainless steel tanks for a few months at a controlled temperature.

Winery Tasting Notes

Grape Variety

100% Cortese.

Brilliant, pale yellow with greenish highlights.

The nose is generous yet intense, with nuances of white flowers, citrus (grapefruit) and fresh almonds.

Cortese is a delicate variety aromatically speaking, but it has a wonderful chalky, mineral texture and palate structure. La Raia Gavi demonstrates these attributes beautifully, and the finish is long with a lingering note of fresh limes.

Food Matching

Serve lightly chilled with shellfish risotto, linguine al pesto or the famous Piedmontese speciality “Vitello Tonnato”.

Cellaring Potential

The beauty of this wine is its youthfulness and vibrancy. Enjoy over the coming 12-18 months.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

La Raia is a family run estate in Piemonte, Italy. In the heart of the hills of Gavi, we produce two kinds of Gavi D.O.C.G. Classic Gavi and Gavi Pisé (left on lees for 12 months), and two kinds of Barbera, Piemonte Barbera and Barbera Largé (aged in barrique for 18 months and suitable for cellaring).

In 2003 Giorgio Rossi Cairo bought the La Raia, Cascina del Melo and Cascina Bergaglio estates creating a single 130 hectares estate. La Raia now comprises 25 hectares of vineyard, 55 of fields and 30 of original oak, chestnut, elderflower and acacia woodland.

Today La Raia is managed by Caterina Rossi Cairo and Tom Dean who live there with their toddlers, Matthias, Elena and Arianna.
