Overview

The fruit was picked in late March, destemmed and crushed before fermentation in Potter fermenters. The juice was racked and returned once a day for 2 weeks and at sugar dryness the skins were pressed the wine was then transferred to tank and Malolactic fermentation was induced, once the malo was complete the wine was returned to oak were it aged for 18 months.

Lighter, fresher and more savoury than the principal Koonowla Cabernet; a touch of mint is one consequence, but doesn't upset me; good drinking over the next five-plus years.

Colour

The colour is deep purple with red hues

Aroma

The wine has a bouquet that is complex with violets, spice and black fruit.

Palate

The palate has good fruit intensity and length with cedar and oak spice balanced with fine long tannins and good acidity. Luckily we were able to get the vast majority of our fruit off the vineyard before the worst of the heat and so the fruit quality was good, protected also by harvesting at night.

Winery Profile

Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley's largest and most historic vineyard properties. The property, just east of Auburn, was first planted with vines in the 1890's and by the early 1900's was producing some 60,000 litres of wine annually from its extensive cellars, before a disastrous fire in 1926 and changing times saw it converted to grain and wool production. Replanting of vines commenced in 1985 and accelerated markedly after Andrew and Booie Michael purchased the property in 1991 and expanded the vineyard to 250 acres.

Andrew and Booie firmly believe that there is a buoyant demand for premium wines that show distinct regional and varietal character, and that brands such as Koonowla can always have a strong presence on retail shelves and restaurant lists around Australia. To that end they have secured the services of two of Australia's most highly regarded winemakers, David O'Leary and Nick Walker. They have an intimate understanding of Clare Valley viticulture and winemaking, and the Michaels work closely with them to ensure that the wines reflect the district's unique terroir.
