In many ways, Kilikanoon’s flagship. Mort Mitchell, Kevin’s father planted the vines as a young man and has tended them ever since. Clare Valley terroir at its purest. The terra rossa soils of our Golden Hillside combine with the altitude to make a wine which we hope should answer all questions, just like the Oracle at Delphi…

Expert Reviews

While the density and complexity of this wine is indubitable the surprise lies in the subdued and restrained nature of the bouquet; the palate reveals masses of black fruits, earth, spice and tar; a savoury example of big boned shiraz.

Rating 94 - Drink by 2018 -James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (JAN/2012)

Winery Tasting Notes

Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Uplifting and complex, a collage of smoky French oak, dark cherries and chocolate.

Impressively flavoured and richly satisfying, layers of licorice, spicy plums and quality oak char saturate the palate interwoven with fine natural tannins and acidity.

Cellaring Potential

An ageing potential of at least 12 -15 years with careful cellaring

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.
