Overview

2013 was another scintillating vintage in the Clare Valley. The long, cool and mostly dry conditions perfectly scripted to create fruit driven, intensely flavoured Rieslings, wines characterised by high natural acidities and linear palates, perfect for enjoyment now or for those that are prepared to commit these to the cellar for adding further complexity.

The unique vineyard terroir and regional elevation of the Mort’s Block vineyard has captured the essence of the vintage, yet again. Watervale soils are typified by fertile red brown loams overlying limestone sub layers; soil profiles that lend themselves to growing Riesling of exceptional distinction and character. All fruit was hand harvested during late February, typically yielding around the 5.0 – 6.0 tonnes per hectare.

Expert Reviews

Light straw-green; the bouquet and palate focus on the intertwined lemon and lime fruit that opens with power and thrust, and finishes the same way, giving the wine that all important length. Rating 94 - Drink by 2021 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (SEP/2013)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Brilliant in clarity, pale straw in colour with youthful green tints.

Aroma

Lifted aromas of fresh limes, lemon curd and floral notes are a compelling assault to the senses.

Palate

Generously flavoured, yet still tightly wound, the palate provides the complete expression of the what the Clare Valley can do in a classic year. Lemons, limes, racy natural acidity all combine in a rewarding and ageworthy flavour experience.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.
