Kilikanoon only produces a Blocks Road Cabernet Sauvignon in vintages of exemplary quality. Our Block’s Road is a blend of some of our finest parcels.

Kilikanoon Blocks Road sets out to showcase what low yielding, fully ripened Clare Valley Cabernet can achieve. Selected parcels of fruit were hand harvested from two 40 year old dry grown vineyards in the Leasingham sub district of the Clare Valley before traditional vinification, basket pressing and 20 months maturation in new and older French oak hogsheads.

Expert Reviews

Estate-grown, and spent 22 months in French oak. Full crimson-purple; this is a seriously good Clare Valley cabernet, with abundant cassis fruit, gently savoury tannins and a long finish. Rating 95 - Drink by 2027 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2014)

Winery Tasting Notes

Inky red in colour with youthful crimson hues.

Intense aromas of blackcurrants, cassis and classic cigar box blend seamlessly on the nose, beautifully enhanced with hints of fine cedary French oak.

A well crafted palate, generous in flavour yet elegantly proportioned. The powerful notes of dark chocolate, cassis and French oak char combine superbly with the fine fruit tannins and natural acidity in a satisfying and lingering finish.

An ageing potential of at least 12 -15 years with careful cellaring.

Food Matching

Classic beef bourguignon or enjoy with hearty mixed mushroom risotto.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Kilikanoon Wines is a boutique winery with an international reputation, located in the heart of South Australia’s stunning Clare Valley. Since 1997 and his first Clare Valley vintage, founder and winemaker Kevin Mitchell has produced wines of individuality with strong regional and varietal definition. Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and now Hermitage terroir is all important, especially for their Shiraz, Riesling, Grenache and Cabernet single varietals.

Like many Australia winemakers Kevin Mitchell is highly trained in both the scientific and artistic sides of winemaking. He also comes from a long tradition of grape growing in South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley, where grapes have been grown and wine made since the 1850s.

The first Kilikanoon release was in 1998, with 1997 vintage Shiraz, Cabernet, Grenache and two 1998 Rieslings. Since that time Kevin has continually refined his skills and has produced a wide portfolio of Kilikanoon wines from some of Australia’s finest terroir.

Kilikanoon’s philosophy is to make the best wines from the best grapes, no matter where they are, so recently we went to France! We make wine in two regions- the Loire Valley and the Rhône Valley.

In late 2007 Kilikanoon, along with partners Janet Holmes à Court and Greg and Kerrie Paramor acquired Seppeltsfield in the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s most revered and historic wineries, established in 1851 and the home to one of the world’s finest collections of barrel-aged fortified wines, including the unique unbroken collection of Vintage dated 100 year old Para Tawny (port) dating back to 1878, when the first wines were laid down, not to be bottled for 100 years. They are delighted to celebrate our first decade. The next looks to be just as exciting.
