McLaren Vale experienced cool conditions in December 2008 and most of January 2009 with temperatures only climbing above 30 degrees on three days up until a hot spell in late January. The rest of 2009 summer was relatively mild allowing the grapes to develop with balanced characters.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from a single vineyard in the Maslin’s Beach area of McLaren Vale grown on the rare geological Blanche Point Formation.

The wine was fermented in a traditional open fermenter with a heading board system using gentle cap management techniques. The pressed wine was matured for 24 months in 85% new French and 15% new American hogsheads. This wine has not been fined and is unfiltered.

Expert Reviews

Full red-purple; the fragrant, black fruit bouquet leads into an elegant, medium-bodied palate that has admirable texture, structure and balance; there are notes of cedar, spice and a touch of chocolate, the superfine tannins running throughout the length of the palate. Rating 95 - Drink by 2030 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion (FEB/2011)

Winery Tasting Notes

Violets, spicy ripe blackberries, mulberries and black currant abound together with subtle hints of dark chocolate raisins.

Full bodied yet showing elegant velvety layers of pure dark berry fruits. These combine with a hint of spice and silken tannins. There is a persistent harmonious finish of dark berries entwined with dark chocolate.

Kangarilla Road winery is a partnership between Kevin and Helen O’Brien. While the wines show the generosity of the McLaren Vale region, they also have a unique Kangarilla Road style, the white wines fragrant and aromatic and the reds an elegant expression of their variety. The Kangarilla Road philosophy remains unchanged: “To produce wines that we enjoy drinking – wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and especially with friends.”
