In 1853 our Kalleske farm and vineyard was established at Moppa, a small sub-district of Greenock in the Barossa’s North-West. The Moppa district was a flourishing settlement of pioneering farming families and gold miners. There were few schools in the region, so local parents established the Moppa Public School in 1873 to give their children a formal education. Located on our Kalleske property, generations of the Kalleske family attended this school until its closure in 1935. Sourced entirely from our Kalleske Moppa vineyard, a trace of Viognier and Petit Verdot has been added to this Shiraz giving it a contemporary edge. This is a genuine hand made wine that’s been grown, vintaged and matured on our Kalleske estate at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa.

This wine is 100% Organic / Biodynamic as certified by Australian Certified Organic.

Expert Reviews

“Sub-regional (north-west) Barossa shiraz, biodynamically grown... Excellent vitality and drinkability. Blackberries, cranberries, sap and smoke. Has that ashen, meaty note so characteristic of cool vintages like 2002 and 2011. Has enough sweetness though to keep Barossa shiraz drinkers happy. Enough slurpy, smooth texture. Clovey, peppery, licoricey finish. Compact and complex. Great wine to hook into”. Rating 91 - Drink: 2012 – 2017 Campbell Mattinson, the Wine Front, November14th 2012

Winery Tasting Notes

The wine is red-purple in colour.

It is immediately attractive with aromas of roses, cherry, blueberry, potpourri, nutmeg, cinnamon and a hint of pepper spice.

The medium-full bodied palate is focused with a burst of bright red fruit balanced with subtle background barrel ferment characters. Tannins are fine and tight adding stylish structure. Pure fruit is the hallmark of this wine with spice and graphite adding drive, together with a touch of dried herbs. Muscular but defined, it is extremely well balanced and finishes lengthy with bright fruit and classy tannins.

Moppa 2010 is an expressive wine that can be enjoyed now or will cellar well in the medium to long term.

Winery Profile

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the regions leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.

The vineyard is managed by Troy's and Tony’s parents, John and Lorraine, and brother, Kym. John has over forty years experience tending the vineyard. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

The Kalleske family are active practitioners of sustainable farming. They are caretakers of the land and not only want to maintain the environment but improve it for future generations. All Kalleske wines are estate grown and vinified with minimalist winemaking techniques used to fully capture the essence of the vineyard allowing genuine hand made estate wines to be produced. The range is a diverse mix of wines that showcases the splendid Kalleske grapes.

Since the first wine release in 2004, Kalleske has rapidly gained a reputation for producing top-quality hand crafted wines. Kalleske are committed to continue making genuine estate grown wines of individuality and of vineyard and winemaking excellence.
