Overview

In 1838, merchant and miller, Johann Georg Kalleske migrated from Prussia, establishing a new life in South Australia. Today, seven generations later, descendant and fellow merchant and miller, Kym John Kalleske, farms our diverse Kalleske property established at Greenock in the North-Western Barossa in 1853. Continuing the family tradition, Kym is a miller of hay and a merchant of chaff, lamb and grapes. This Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon is a single vineyard wine that’s been hand pruned and harvested by Kym. Traditional winemaking and two years in barrel has ensured a full-bodied varietal Cabernet Sauvignon displaying classic structure and richness typical of the Kalleske vineyard.

This wine is 100% Organic / Biodynamic as certified by Australian Certified Organic.

Expert Reviews

“Yet another Kalleske brother (Kym) is involved with this wine, as he alone prunes the vines and picks the grapes, a break from his other farming and merchant activities. The vintage was kind to cabernet, and the grapes were picked at optimum ripeness, the varietal expression on the mediumbodied palate clear and uncluttered”Rating 92 - Drink by 2020 - James Halliday, Wine Companion October/November 2012

“Single vineyard Barossa cabernet. Greenock sub-region. Matured in all French oak, 30 percent new – for two years. Comes in the sexy new proprietary Kalleske bottles. It’s a grapey wine. Dark, flavoursome, distinctly Barossan – but fresh and juicy. Boysenberried, almost. Twists of herbs mark it as cabernet but dark, fleshy, curranty flavours are the main go. The tannin feels every bit like chewy on thick-skinned grapes. Even flow through the finish. Will be very interesting

to see how this matures. It has an effortless sense of balance to it.”91+ PointsDrink: 2014 - 2019 - Campbell Mattinson, the Wine Front, March 27th 2012

“Kalleske A ripe and pungent cabernet from this excellent Barossa vintage. Blackcurrant and slightly meaty characters on the nose. The palate is generous and textural as it rolls off the tongue. Fine tannins and perfectly integrated oak create a seamless, silky-smooth palate. There’s density and concentration, with super length and a polished finish”4 Stars - Ray Jordan, Weekend West Magazine, Perth 16/06/2012

Winery Profile

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the regions leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.

The vineyard is managed by Troy's and Tony’s parents, John and Lorraine, and brother, Kym. John has over forty years experience tending the vineyard. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

The Kalleske family are active practitioners of sustainable farming. They are caretakers of the land and not only want to maintain the environment but improve it for future generations. All Kalleske wines are estate grown and vinified with minimalist winemaking techniques used to fully capture the essence of the vineyard allowing genuine hand made estate wines to be produced. The range is a diverse mix of wines that showcases the splendid Kalleske grapes.

Since the first wine release in 2004, Kalleske has rapidly gained a reputation for producing top-quality hand crafted wines. Kalleske are committed to continue making genuine estate grown wines of individuality and of vineyard and winemaking excellence.
