Appellation: Grand Cru Chablis A.C., `Les Clos`

The great ‘Les Clos’ is the supreme form of Chablis. It combines power, with the most intriguing complexities and length – none of them obvious and all are kept tightly bound by Chablis’ disciplining structure.

The ‘Le Clos’ vineyard, on the slopes of the Serein River Valley, immediately to the East of the town of Chablis, is the perfect site and exposure for Chardonnay to ripen – but not too much – and to express its Chablis personality.

Pale yellow. Captivating bright, pure, complex nose is dominated by iodine and powdered stone. Less powerful than the Valmur but sharply delineated, with terrific cut and depth to its saline, fine-grained lemon, mineral and iodiney oyster shell fla vors. Finishes wonderfully long and tactile, with terrific subtle perfume. Manages to be very rich without coming across as thick, in the way of the best examples of this great grand cru. This has delivered on its early promise but will require patience. 94(+)/100 : Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar.

A spicy and mineral-suffused nose of green fruit and rose petal is trimmed in enough wood that it vacillates between more than subtle and less than intrusive. The big, rich, powerful and mineral-driven flavors have already eaten the wood though and the length here is so impressive that it is easily the most persistent wine in the entire range. A knock-out with superb cellaring potential. 92-95/100 (don't miss !) : Drink 2015+

Winery Tasting Notes


‘Les Clos’ is power with delicacy and shows the more elegant of Chablis characters; flowers, a little spice (cinnamon maybe?), lemon rind/flower and mineral.


The palate is big, but never allowed to get away. This has the most desirable characters of great Chablis and White Burgundy; the ‘cut’ of the palate and nervy tingle (‘nervous’) that finishes it all.


The 2008 vintage is good mix of freshness and flesh. It should develop to be very enjoyable within a couple more years – but no hurry after that!

Food Matching

Like the other Chablis, this essentially is so friendly it can be just enjoyed on its own and is quite relaxed with many foods. It will however, most enjoy a dish of great flavour, like a piece of fish cooked with butter and lemon, and will take other elements in, such as pastry, at the same time. A great Chardonnay.

Jean-Marc Brocard's origins lie in the Côte d'Or. For he is a farmer's son from the village of Chaudenay-le-Château, not even the son of the vigneron. It was an accident of marriage that brought him to wine, he married Claudine (his childhood sweetheart), a vigneron's daughter from the village of St-Bris-le-Vineux in the valley of Yonne.

Starting with a hectare of vines from his father-in-law, Emile Petit, he has created an estate of some 180 hectares vineyards in Chablis and Burgundy.

Jean-Marc acknowledges a considerable debt to one of the old vignerons of St-Cyr les Colons, a man Louis Petit, who despite the name is unrelated to his father-in-law. The oldest vines of the Domaine Sainte Claire came from Louis Petit and it was he who gave to Jean-Marc the sense of tradition and a respect for nature, showing him that you can still maintain the old traditions, while practicing modern methods. Born and bred, devoted to the land and it's characterful wines.

A Vine grower, Jean-Marc is a specialist in the different wines of Chablis and its surrounding region. Brocard and his assistant wine maker pay close attention to the different characteristics of the various vineyards within the estate. Different cuvées of Chablis are labeled to the astrological sign at the time of bottling.

Committed also to Eco-friendly viticulture, Julien Brocard, Jean-Marc's son, develop the Biodynamic culture.

The company exports 60% of its produce mainly to the UK, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan and the USA.

Jean-Marc says "The truth of wine lies in the soil where it has grown. The technique is an important factor in the wine growing, but it is only an aid, the wine is essentially the product of its soil." also " The soil of Chablis is exceptional and cannot be found anywhere in the world ; therefore I am a hard believer of the future of Chablis even for the next Millennium."
