The 2010 Juniper Estate Chardonnay is intended to be reflective of our two vineyards, and we have attempted to rein in the richness of the Wilyabrup fruit component by blending Chardonnay from our southern vineyard in Forest Grove, which has more finesse and restraint. We have used barrel ferment, lees contact, bâtonnage and malo-lactic fermentation, but each of these variables has been carefully controlled and monitored so as to gently add interest without bludgeoning the fruit expression.

The 2010 vintage has turned out to be quite a fine one. The summer was warm, but not hot and during harvest the days were sunny & the nights cool, which contributed to good flavour development and excellent natural acidity retention. This wine will cellar well for up to 10 years.

Expert Reviews

"The first impression here is of a concentrated and complex young chardonnay; aromas of peach and lemon, nicely dressed in fresh cut oak, and hints of butterscotch too. The palate gives a smooth and even textural ride, with a ripe core of peachy fruit and a long fleshy finish. Has elegance, decent concentration, complexity and balance. "Rating 93 - Nick Stock - The Age Good Wine Guide 2012

"Shows the continued improvement of Juniper's chardonnays. Really complex mix of stone fruit, brioche and nutty grapefruit on the nose. There is a minerally precision about the structure with its well weighted oak infusion and fine acid. Subtle hints of butter and roasted almonds complete the picture. Excellent wine."90 Points cellar up to five years. - The West Australian Wine Guide 2012 - Ray Jordan

Winery Tasting Notes

An array of fruit and barrel ferment characters give an instant invitation to this complex result of two great vineyards. The richness of Wilyabrup is interwoven with the finesse of the Higher Plane vineyard in Forest Grove, south of Margaret River.

The palate is restrained and suggests white nectarine and just ripe buerre bosc pears with long, lingering flavours resulting from a subtle combination of lees- stirring, partial malolactic ferment and fine oak spice.

This wine will cellar well for up to 10 years.

Juniper Estate is a producer of premium wines in Wilyabrup, the heart of the Margaret River winegrowing area. It is one of the oldest vineyards in the area. No sub-region has been historically more important in the success of Margaret River than Wilyabrup, where the first vineyards were planted and wineries built and which continues to be home to a disproportionately large number of famous, usually small, vineyards.

Mark Messenger has been the Winemaker at Juniper Estate since 1998. He has responsibility for production of all Juniper wines and is supported by an experienced team in the winery and the vineyard. Mark was Assistant Winemaker at Cape Mentelle, in Margaret River, from 1990 to 1998.
