Overview

Pinot Grigio is a grape variety that is one of the oldest in the world but has only recently started to gain a following in Australia. A long time favorite in Europe, especially Italy, Pinot Grigio has now started to be enjoyed by the Australian drinking public for it’s unique flavours and delicious textural qualities.Pinot Grigio can be quite confusing as the styles can vary greatly depending on when and how the winemaker chooses to pick and process the fruit. Gris can be picked early and processed entirely in tank which results in a tight, mineral, sometimes flinty wine, while at the other end of the spectrum, fruit can be picked late, fermented in barrel with the resultant wine being quite viscous, displaying full ripe fruit flavours and an almost oily finish on the palate.

Unusual to see a grigio that’s had some time in barrel. Foot, quite deliberately, in each camp.

In any case the wine works. It’s a pleasure to drink. It’s spicy and floral – it most qualifies for the word ‘perfumed’ – with nuts and stonefruit-like characters giving plenty of flavour to hang on to. Honeysuckle, almost into rose petal, notes combine with a gentle vanilla-pod character to continue the pretty them. You could argue that it’s more gris than grigio but it remains energetic and, more importantly, tasty.

Winery Tasting Notes

Aroma & Palate

At Helen’s Hill Estate, we combine the best of both methods and produce a Pinot Grigio that is somewhere in the middle! The result is a wine that displays a clean fresh finish balancing both fruit flavours and acidity from tank fermentation with nuances of rich, quite textural flavours on the mid palate from the barrel fermentation. A great white wine for any season.
