Shows gorgeous aromas of lemon, peach, toast, leather and spices. The attack is rich and forceful, backed by a racy structure that keeps this pure and drives the finish. Perhaps not as expansive on the aftertaste, but long nonetheless, with spice and mineral notes lingering. Still needs time. Best from 2012 through 2035.Rating 96 - Wine Spectator
An ornate and powerful vintage for the cellars of krugistes, this is breathtaking Champagne. It is as layered and complex as a grand cru Burgundy, though more searing in its adolescent acidity, leaving a tooth buzz in its wake. With air, the layers of the wine begin to show in flavors of marzipan, fresh cream and an underlying essence of limestone. It's severe on the surface, kinder underneath. Altogether complete and needing five to ten years of bottle age to build into its full grandeur. Rating 96 - Wine & Spirits
The 1998 Brut Vintage is a gorgeous wine for near-term drinking, Warm, toasty notes lead to an expansive core of fruit that covers the palate. This isn't the most complex Krug Vintage, but it also won’t take years or decades to offer its finest drinking. 2010-2020. Rating 94 The Wine Advocate
Bright true gold with a brisk bead. Deeply concentrated honey, pear skin, orange peel, peach pit, botanical herb and floral aromas are brightened by smoky minerals. Chewy citrus and pit fruit flavors stain the palate and are given a youthfully tangy edge by nervy acidity, gaining strength with air. Finishes with powerful grip and resounding echoes of honey and citrus pith. A serious, painfully young wine that needs patience; I wouldn't go near it for at least another six or seven years. Krug Vintage is designed to blend vintage character with Krug’s house style. Krug selects young fermented wines which best represent the character of that particular year. The three grape varieties are blended to create harmony: Chardonnay’s elegance, Pinot Noir’s fullness and the fruit of carefully selected Pinot Meunier grapes bring finesse and complexity to the wine.
A Halycon Decade
For the House of Krug, the 1990s were a halcyon decade – ten years that produced four superb vintages, each with its own unique and outstanding personality: Krug 1990, remarkable for its combination of elegance and power; Krug 1995, classic and charismatic; Krug 1996, extreme and eccentric. Described by Olivier Krug as combining the warm, mellow character of Krug 1989 with the spirit and frankness of Krug 1995, the fourth and final vintage, Krug 1998, represents a fitting culmination to this golden decade.
