Expert Reviews

The fascinating personality of tempranillo is captured well in this Western Australian red. Sarsaparilla, cherry and mint-like aromatics have a chocolatey overlay, and there?s light to medium intensity of succulent flavour. It has an attractive, slightly grainy texture and balanced tannins. Drink over two years. Ralph Kyte-Powerll, Epicure, The Age (25/JUL/2009)

Once again, MadFish has turned up a surprising wine. Clean, aromatic, fruit-driven and stylish, it smells of cherry, plum and mint, while it has lashings of flavour in the mouth, underlined by ample but not harsh tannins. The structure's in balance with the generous flavour.Rating 94 - Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine (22/04/2009)

This is something new from Howard Park. A medium-weight wine made from this increasingly popular Spanish variety. This opens with a lifted bramble cedary aroma displaying traces of fine dusty earth. The palate is dry and savoury with an almost arid finish that is so good for matching with food.Rating 88 - Ray Jordan, West Weekend Magazine (27/09/2008)

Cherry style top notes with a savoury undercurrent. Delicious.Rating 93 - Tony Keys, The Key Review of Wines (08/07/2009)

Cellaring Potential

This wine will improve for up to five years given good cellaring conditions.

Winemaking Note

The fruit was hand destemmed, with about 10-20% being left as whole berries. After cold soaking for 3 days, the ferments were hand plunged or pumped over 2-4 times daily and temperatures were allowed to get quite high to aid flavour and colour extraction. The skins were basket-pressed at dryness and matured in older French barrels for 12 months before blending.

About Us

The MadFish story begins in the far southern reaches of Western Australia where 15 kilometres from the quiet coastal town of Denmark is the picturesque Madfish Bay. According to local folklore, the bay’s tranquillity is broken when two tides meet. The fish confused by this natural phenomenon, can be observed leaping in the air as if in a state of complete madness.

Our Label

The artwork for the label was originally designed by the late Maxine Fumagalli, a Noongar artist from Western Australia’s Great Southern, who had a deep love for the land and the people of the South-West region.

Her designs reflect the Aboriginal understanding that there is unity between land, sea, stars, animals and people, hence the inclusion of all elements in the label’s design.

The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perserverance and tolerance - no doubt characteristics displayed by the fish in MadFish Bay.
