Overview

The palate is crisp and bright with an initial burst of honeydew melon, roasted hazelnut, beeswax and complexing bacon smoke balanced by a more textural mid-palate with cashew barrel fermentation characters.

The finish is long clean lemon and grapefruit flavours with crisp acidity. This is a complex and richly bodied chardonnay with great balance and structure.

Expert Reviews

“You can see the family resemblance with the Howard Park Chardonnay, which is praise. It's likewise a restrained, refined, understated style with good acidity and some Chablis-esque underlying complexities. It's tight and nervy and will improve with more time. Drink 5 years.”Rating 91 - Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine (01/JUN/2009)

“MadFish's Gold Turtle wines have been consistently outstanding over the past few years. It bears no relation to the quality inside the bottle, but the label design and printing for this Gold Turtle Chardonnay is terrific too.It starts full and rich but finishes fine - in drinking terms it's a perfect chardonnay. Lots of flavour and yet lots of food-friendly finesse. It tastes of peach and cedar, mineral and perhaps a spot of both grapefruit and lemon. Its various components mesh together so well that all you really notice is that it's a fine drink. That, as it turns out, lingers beautifully on your tongue.Drink to 2012.” Rating 93 - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front (17/NOV/2009)

“"the notes are spot on: 'we aim to have this wine age in the medium term but it is a treat to drink immediately.' Nuff said.""” Rating 92 - Tony Keys, The Key Report (08/JUL/2009)

“Very intense. Pure chardonnay on the nose, displaying strong butterscotch and light-toast characters with a sliver of lime. The palate is intense and powerful with a sustained, balanced finish. Classy wine at this price.”Rating 91- Ray Jordan, The West Australian, Fresh Magazine (26/FEB/2009)

Palate

The 2007 MadFish Gold Turtle Chardonnay is a classic exponent of the ‘modern’ style of barrel fermented Chardonnay. The wine structure is lighter and fresher with cleaner, crisper mouthfeel than the Chardonnays of earlier years. The judicious use of complimentary oak has produced a wine of style and balance.

Cellaring Potential

This wine will develop further over the next 3 to 5 years, but has an appealing combination of fruit, structure and complexity that is best enjoyed in its youth.

About Us

The MadFish story begins in the far southern reaches of Western Australia where 15 kilometres from the quiet coastal town of Denmark is the picturesque Madfish Bay. According to local folklore, the bay’s tranquillity is broken when two tides meet. The fish confused by this natural phenomenon, can be observed leaping in the air as if in a state of complete madness.

Our Label

The artwork for the label was originally designed by the late Maxine Fumagalli, a Noongar artist from Western Australia’s Great Southern, who had a deep love for the land and the people of the South-West region.

Her designs reflect the Aboriginal understanding that there is unity between land, sea, stars, animals and people, hence the inclusion of all elements in the label’s design.

The traditional aboriginal water turtle design on the label is a symbol of perserverance and tolerance - no doubt characteristics displayed by the fish in MadFish Bay.
