Expert Reviews

Deep crimson-purple; while not sacrificing elegance, has thegreatest volume of fruit of the three Shirazs. With blackberry, licorice andplum, that has swallowed the oak; a complete wine in every respect.Drink to 2023. Rating 95 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2011

This single-vineyard red from Frankland River is one of WA's finest shirazes. The 2008 has a richness, concentration of ripe red-cherry and red-plum flavours and succulence that catches the attention. Drink now or cellar. Rating 95 - Peter Forrestal, STM Magazine, The Sunday Times (30/SEP/2010)

Quite an elegant and restrained, bright purple wine; very peppery. Mint and berries on the nose and lovely cherry flavours with a sweet tannin backbone on the palate.Louisa Rose, Nigel Dolan & Phil Reedman MW, Winestate (01/SEP/2010)

Bright, high tone varietal fruit on the nose and a simple, well-balanced cassis palate.Peter Simic, Winestate (01/SEP2010)

Now this is a satisfying mouthful. While this wine too is soft, long, juicy and fruit-driven, it is seamless and almost opulent while retaining elegance. The fruit is of even greater length than the Leston release and is better earlier drinking. It too will improve for 10 years plus. Delicious. Rating 18 - John Jens, Western Suburbs Weekly (15/JUN/2010)

Just splendid. Spice, liquorice, violets and blackberried fruit. We could smell this all day! It's medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, enough flavour and a brightness, lightness and length. This is the kind of Great Southern shiraz we like to see?lots of class. Rating 93 - Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh, The Big Red Wine Book 2010/2011 (01/JUN/2010)

Winery Tasting Notes

Colour

Dense purple wine with a black heart yet brilliant clarity.

Aroma

It displays lifted intense blackberry and dark plum fruit aromas and spices: traces of cinnamon, clove and anise evolve as the wine opens up. The primary fruits are complemented by dark chocolate and mocha complexity which will develop with further cellaring.

Palate

The palate of the 2008 Scotsdale Shiraz is still focused and tight, a youthful expression of Frankland Shiraz displaying great concentration but also elegance. Fleshy sweet black fruits with underlying Dutch licorice and five spice fill the mid-palate. The classy tannins are layered, fine and powdery adding great persistence to the finish.

Cellaring Potential

Medium term. 5 - 8 years recommended.

Winemaking Note

The Howard Park Scotsdale wines carry the Howard Park label and therefore are sourced from only the highest regarded vineyards and are given extraordinary attention in the vineyard. Canopy management is designed to maximise fruit exposure to the sunlight and yields are low to achieve flavour and colour concentration with harvest determined according to flavour with little regard for analytical data.

History

Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: "I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines". This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.

Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.

"We have worked towards establishing Howard Park as a premium family wine company. This success will be measured by the work we do now for future generations."  Jeff Burch

Our Philosophy

This founding two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park's wine making philosophy which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new. Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. As a result our Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.

"We have a simple philosophy; premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Simply, we go to wherever the fruit grows best." Jeff Burch
