The Howard Park Chardonnay is a modern style of Australian’ barrel-fermented Chardonnay: elegant, lean and sophisticated. This wine displays mineral, citric and pear fruit characters with some savoury and nutty notes from the interaction of oak and lees. The Howard Park Chardonnay will enormously reward those that are patient enough to cellar this wine. It will develop wonderful secondary characters after about a year and will drink well for five years.

Expert Reviews

Based on the last entry, it should come as little surprise to find this solo effort from Howard Park also impressed the judges.

In common with its Marchand & Burch counterpart, this Chardonnay also features Porongurup fruit, but this time as part of a blend with grapes from fellow Great Southern sub-regions Mount Barker and Denmark.

2012 was a year that sparked excitable noises from winemakers across Australia and the western end of this vast continent proved no exception. With consistently warm, dry conditions during the growing season, Howard Park’s cool 380m altitude, south facing Mount Barrow vineyard provided the majority of fruit for this vintage.” Gold MEdal - Gabriel Savage, The Drinks Business

Winery Tasting Notes

Brilliant in appearance and pale straw in colour with lemon/lime hues.

The bouquet is an enticing mix of white field flowers, grapefruit, pear essence and brioche.

Enriched with layers of nutmeal, the palate’s fine, creamy texture is supported by toasted vanillin oak. The bright lemon acidity adds a degree of restraint and length to finish the wine.

Food Matching

Grilled Western Australian dhufish served with a warm spring salad of snow peas, asparagus, baby spinach and crumbled goat’s feta.

A wine of great flavours, complexity and style, the 2012 Howard Park Chardonnay will age gracefully over the next 6 to 8 years.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: "I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines". This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.

Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.

"We have worked towards establishing Howard Park as a premium family wine company. This success will be measured by the work we do now for future generations."  Jeff Burch

Our Philosophy

This founding two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park's wine making philosophy which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new. Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. As a result our Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.

"We have a simple philosophy; premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Simply, we go to wherever the fruit grows best." Jeff Burch
