‘Abercrombie’ is the definitive Cabernet Sauvignon of Howard Park Wines. Since the first release in 1986, a multi-region five-vineyard Western Australian blend, this wine has been a true reflection of the best fruit chosen from a selection of the oldest vineyards in Western Australia’s Margaret River region and cool climate Mount Barker and Porongurup sub-regions of the Great Southern. Produced from the top 1% of available Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and then only in the years when grapes of extraordinarily high quality are available.

Named after Jeff Burch’s Great-Grandfather Walter Abercrombie, this Howard Park flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is noted for its outstanding structural complexity and exceptional elegance. It combines the austere dusty earth and blackcurrant aromas from Mount Barker, with the classic rich fruit and chocolaty palate of Margaret River. Together they produce an elegantly balanced cabernet sauvignon with mature ripe tannins backed up by quality French oak. Careful long term cellaring will realize this wine’s full potential.

The ‘Abercrombie’ Cabernet Sauvignon is listed with Wine Ark in the Top 30 of Australia’s most collected wines and Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine rates the Abercrombie as ‘Excellent’ denoting ‘high performing wines of exquisite quality’. The wine has also received many top ratings from wine writers including James Halliday and Robert Parker.

Expert Reviews

“Deep crimson; a youthful and effusive wine, displaying the very essence of cassis and cedar, with a fairly hefty dose of new oak; undoubtedly built for the long haul, as the concentration of fruit and the impressive level of tannins simply must have time to settle down and integrate with the oak; the wait will be worth the effort.” Rating 96 - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2013

Always greet a freshly opened box of WA Cabernet with a smile.

Blackcurrant, bay leaf, licorice, cream/mocha/cedar/vanilla oak – quality smells from top to bottom. Medium to full bodied with a fine spread of firm ripe tannin that particularly hits its mark on the finish, drawing it long. Tasted over two days, the second showed better acid integration and balance and added a point to the score. Pretty much delivers what you’d expect of a modern Howard Park Cabernet – class and composure.” Rating 95 - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

“Sourced from the Great Southern, this is tighter and more controlled than the outstanding 2009, but loses nothing in comparison. Has a leafy, cedary aroma with some light red berry notes. The palate is multi-layered with an excellent tannin and oak combination. Keenly focused and long, with great texture and structure. Outstanding wine now and in the cellar.” Rating 95 - Ray Jordan, The West Weekend

Such an elegant wine. Slim line but packing in medium-to-full bodied weight, mature tannins rippling among dark briary fruit, cedary oak seamlessly integrated into the body of the wine. An impressive release, built for the long haul too.” Rating 95 - Mike Bennie, WBM

Winery Tasting Notes

The deep and dark ruby colour implies the intensity and richness that is abundantly delivered on bouquet and palate.

Full of dense and very ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of sweet mint, freshly rubbed savoury herbs, earth and truffle.

The fruit power and opulence of the palate is deftly cradled by well integrated ripe fruit, firm acidity and fine oak tannins. A wine of great presence that will age with grace.

Another outstanding vintage of Abercrombie that will cellar well for more than a decade.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Howard Park Wines was established in 1986 and was one of the original pioneers of the Great Southern region. The founding owner of Howard Park, John Wade ventured west to Western Australia's South West with one belief: "I don't know any other region where you can produce both Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon as premium wines". This founding belief began the journey of Howard Park.

Now over 20 years on, Howard Park remains a family owned winery under the guidance of Jeff and Amy Burch. With a philosophy to produce wines of distinct regional character with an uncompromising commitment to quality Howard Park has forged an international reputation for their wines and an expanded range including single vineyard and multi regional wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern.

"We have worked towards establishing Howard Park as a premium family wine company. This success will be measured by the work we do now for future generations."  Jeff Burch

Our Philosophy

This founding two region philosophy aligns with Howard Park's wine making philosophy which adopts an ethos for integrating the old with the new. Howard Park embraces modern technology whilst employing traditional wine making techniques and produces internationally recognised wines of the highest quality. As a result our Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines are only ever produced in very small quantities, but are noted for their rare balance of elegance and power with a proven history of ageing with increased complexity and interest.

"We have a simple philosophy; premium wine can only come from excellent fruit. Simply, we go to wherever the fruit grows best." Jeff Burch
